Children easily die when sleeping in the same beds with their parents
An inspector of sudden deaths warned that more than 300 children in UK and Wales might die every year due to sleeping in the same beds with their parents.
Roger Whittaker, working at Yorkshire , said that he had witnessed 12 oppressive cases unintentionally within 12 years and believed that this would happen everywhere.
Meanwhile, Melanie Every, a regional director of Midwives Royal University, thought that sleeping in the same bed reap many benefits for breast-feeding mothers and children. Therefore, hindering this thing could cause bad effects.
"We understand that there are many cultures and women continuing to allow children to sleep together even when there exists the warnings", she said. "Now the important thing is to give them some pieces of advice about the safest way of sleeping together rather than just tell them about that."
Roger Whittaker appealed to Midwives for changing their viewpoints. He estimated that more than 300 children died every year from suffocation because of sleeping in the same beds. In his report, Whittaker showed that many colleagues in West Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire also recorded similar death cases.
"It is a big number. One case which is a big number happens in situation that can be prevented."
Last year, UK Health Ministry also changed one of the leaflets to warn about the risk of sleeping together. The leaflet warned that "the safest position for children is in the cot in the same room of parents in the first 6 months." In that position, you totally have chances to caress, feed, and put them back before sleeping."
In the list of death risks for children, parents' smoking, drinking wine or using drugs while sleeping with their children was also included.
